Shipping Container To Store Goods

Transportation of cargo is an important peripheral industry which helps in the growth of any industry. For any product to become available in the local market, the goods have to be transported from the producer to the retailer. In fact the double digit growth of any country is possible only if this service industry is efficient and well oiled. This industry has various modes of transportation like trucks, railways, ships and planes at its service. A shipping container is a standardized container which is created to fit into most of these modes of transport, erasing the need and also the hassle involved in moving or reloading goods from one container to another. These containers, also known as Iso containers, drastically improved the handling of goods. The most common shipping container is the 20 foot long container which is however being replaced by the 40 foot long containers due to cost considerations.

The history of the shipping container goes back to the 1920s when containers capable if being transported from the railways to other modes of transport started to be used. However, the first actual ancestor of the modern day shipping container would have to be American entrepreneur Malcom McLean's use of cargo containers which were sealed throughout the transportation process. The initial days of containerization did not see any global standardization with standardization limited only to country specifications rather than global ones. Global standardization started only after various countries and companies agreed on standard measurements.1970 saw the negotiations bearing fruit and the first draft for standardization being prepared.

The use of standardized shipping containers drastically reduced handling and freight costs of companies and therefore giving a leg up to the industries concerned. However the shipping container was not welcomed in a big way during its initial days. No one was able to foresee the effect that containerization would have on industries with people simply assuming that the farthest the shipping container revolution would go would be to make most industries change to this form of transportation. Not only ships and railways, standardization has also forced trucks to modify themselves according to the standard container sizes. The use of shipping containers also gives the benefit of providing increased security to the goods inside. Security systems in place do not allow the containers to be opened during transit: because of all modes of transport adapting themselves to the standard measurements, goods remain sealed within the shipping container till they reach the addressee. An interesting snippet about the shipping container is that the durable material that goes into making it makes it useful to build houses and other structures.

There are some disadvantages of the shipping container as it have however been noted as their tendency to fall off ships. Another alleged disadvantage is that the advent of the shipping container led to the unemployment of thousands of cargo handlers.
